Grab your gumbo and jambalaya, but don’t get too full … because Dr. John is about to fulfill your music appetite. If I had to define this album with one word, it would be “Contemporary”. Artists who have been in the spotlight for as many years as Dr. John, usually stay in their comfort zone. Not the case for this guy. It’s as perfect for the time, and scene as any great rock and roll record out right now. Of course you’ll hear the New Orleans mojo, groovin’ drum beats, and Dr. John’s signature staggering vocals, but it’s something that can be understood by teens and young adults as a contemporary sound. In my opinion, Dr. John hasn’t slowed down a bit, and is a true example of a great artist who can stand the test of time. Adapting to several generations of music (let alone one) is extremely hard. He nailed it with this record. In my opinion, it’s the best since his 1971 “Gumbo”.
Great musicianship on the record. I saw Dr. John at a festival last summer, and he blew me away with how good he could still sing, and how good his band was. He found the perfect mix of musicians for this album, and it’s obvious as soon as you hear it. It’s a must own album. Get it now! 5 Stars!
